Youth Energy Efficiency Outreach Program
(“Youth Lights”)


With support from the Governor’s Energy Office, COIPL is excited offer a new program for youth groups in congregations. Youth group members with the assistance of their adult group leaders may distribute energy efficiency kits to the elderly and households in need of assistance in their congregation or community.

Each kit contains four compact fluorescent light bulbs and a water-saving low flow shower head. Group members may offer assistance in getting the bulbs installed. The program provides the youth group members education about climate change and its critical relationship to energy. They will then pass what they learn on to the recipients. The program is designed to promote cross generational interaction and empower youth to make a positive impact on their community.

Recipients will see an immediate drop in their electrical and heating bills and make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A family may save as much as $100 per year (assuming all four bulbs are in use six hours a day). A youth group that distributes and helps to install 50 kits will achieve a 25 ton per year reduction in CO2 emission!

We suggest a donation of $100 per congregation for this program to help cover administrative costs.  However, we invite all congregations to participate, including those with limited resources.
