Youth Energy Efficiency Outreach Program (2008)
In 2008, with support from the Governor’s Energy Office, CoIPL offered a new program for youth groups in congregations. Youth group members with the assistance of their adult group leaders distributed energy efficiency kits to the elderly and households in need of assistance in their congregation or community.
Each kit contained four compact fluorescent light bulbs and a water-saving low flow shower head. Group members sometimes offered assistance in getting the bulbs installed. The program provided the youth group members with education about climate change and its critical relationship to energy. They will then passed what they learned on to the recipients. The program was designed to promote cross generational interaction and empower youth to make a positive impact on their community.
Recipients will see an immediate drop in their electrical and heating bills and make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A family may save as much as $100 per year (assuming all four bulbs are in use six hours a day). A youth group that distributed 50 kits will achieve a 25 ton per year reduction in CO2 emission!
